#SoulFusion #TBT: She Was So

Anyone who knows me knows I’m always working on new material. However, Sometimes you need to look back to look forward. Late last night I was updating my website and watched the video of my performance of “She Was So“. I really like that song and when I listened to it, I could clearly remember the way I felt when I wrote it. It’s definitely got soul and its very own groove and that is exactly what this #SoulFusion movement is about. Some of the people I trust to critique my work ask if it was influenced by R&B but it’s actually more influenced by jazz and the blues. I had the pleasure of interviewing legendary jazz musician, Nasar Abadey, and he explained to me that jazz is truly African American Classical Music and that is what he calls it. He went on to describe in passionate detail how the historical roots of most modern music came out of jazz and how it continues to influence the world in so many different ways. Its one thing to study jazz, but to actually sit less than three feet from a man who not only was physically present for more than the last 50 years of the evolution of jazz is really an incredible experience. That’s one of the things I love about writing music everyday and working and living a life surrounded by what you love. I get to have these fantastic exchanges and experiences with some really incredible people.

Later that day, a female friend of mine asked me, “who’s really doing something different and new in R&B?”. I couldn’t answer, her. Most of the mainstream artists in R&B are either total garbage or pop singers being called R&B. I’m not the authority on R&B but after thinking about it for a few minutes I realized that I hadn’t been listening to a lot of R&B lately anyway. I guess I’ve been so possessed with the development of my project, nothing else could sway my attention. That said, next week is going to be R&B week for me. I’m going to listen to and write R&B all week! In the meantime, you can listen to “She Was So”,
